ICE Agent

5 Things to Do if Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) Comes Knocking at Your Door

The current political climate is causing many immigrants and their families to live in fear of encountering Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Agents. It is critical that all immigrants understand their legal rights when it comes to dealing with ICE, both to protect themselves during the encounter and to aid any defense strategy they may require afterward. Here are five things you can do if ICE comes knocking on your door:

  1. Do Not Open Your Door – ICE cannot legally gain access to your home without a warrant.
  2. Stay Calm, Remain Silent – ICE can use anything you say in a court of law so, best to stay calm and exercise your right to remain silent.
  3. Do Not Sign Anything – Speak with an attorney before you sign anything ICE gives you. Otherwise you could be sorry!
  4. Call to Report a Raid – Noting exactly what happened… Video, photos, badge numbers & how many agents were present are all helpful when reporting. The UWD Hotline is 1.844.363.1423
  5. Legal Assistance – Find a good immigration attorney who will familiarize herself with your case. This will enable you to confront your case head on.
